Screensavers preferred to intranets as best way for immediate internal communications

Netpresenter, July 5th 2005, Beek, The Netherlands.

Employees want more direct, succinct corporate information with freedom to access more additional background

Beek, The Netherlands, 5th July 2005 - Research undertaken by the University of Twente, Netherlands, into the effectiveness of technology as an internal communications medium has shown that screensavers can be one of the most effective means of rapidly delivering communications messages when compared to email and corporate intranets.

According to the study of 695 employees at Eastman Chemicals, De Amersfoortse (Fortis) and the city of Breda, 80% said that the use of screensavers made it easier for them to receive and absorb internal corporate information, significantly improving their organisation’s internal communications.

Said Frank Hoen, Chief Executive Officer of Netpresenter:-

“The most important aspect of any internal communications programme is ensuring that employees see, read and absorb the information. This study shows that short, succinct messages delivered by screensavers, supported by additional content available through email and corporate intranets, is one of the most effective ways to achieve this.”

Added Corinne van Iersel, Manager Communications & Public Affairs for Europe, Middle East & Africa at Eastman Chemicals, one of the companies that participated in the study:-

“Everyone is flooded with information and messages. They are so overwhelmed, they simply stop reading. One can send an email to employees, but it is questionable if it is being read at all, and if so, if it was read on time. I believe the broken record technique of repeating information is the best method of effective communications and certainly for effective internal communications. The nice thing about screensavers is that for the first time, it enables me to use that technique effectively.”
