Cops
Catch Crooks with Screen Saver
INTERNET
SHOWCASE, SAN DIEGO, CA
January 28, 1998
Police forces
in Europe report significant increases in their crime-solving rates
since the introduction of Netpresenter screen savers on their desktop
computers. Several thousand police officers in the UK, the Netherlands
and Belgium are using the Netpresenter screen saver today to get
up-to-date news on fugitives, stolen cars, and missing children.
"Originally,
screen savers were intended to prevent computer monitors from
burning out", says Frank Hoen, president and founder of Netpresenter.
"We soon realized, however, that they had a much wider use.
Our Corporate Communications Suite enables organizations to set
up their own news channels, without unsolicited advertising. Whatever
line of business they are in, whatever network they have. The
screen saver automatically kicks in when news updates are made
available."
When asked
for explanations, Ton Jansen, spokesmen of the Dutch Police Force,
reports two possible causes. First of all the speed with which
news is disseminated. "Last week, for example, we had an
important incident reported at 16.55 on a Friday afternoon.
-- Have
you ever tried to get something done on a Friday afternoon? --
Now the news was all over the place in seconds flat." And
secondly, "The screen saver jogs the collective memory of
everybody on the force. Remarks like Who was that guy again
they briefed us about are things of the past. With one glance
at the screen, everyone knows instantly whos on our most-wanted
list".
"Netpresenter
has been invaluable," says the Head of Briefings of a North
London Police Force. "In particular its ability to automatically
display pictures from closed-circuit television cameras has resulted
in the identification and arrest of numerous individuals."
The Dutch police has similar experiences. "On one occasion
we arrested an arsonist because an officer saw his picture on
the screen saver, on other occasions pictures of stolen cars helped
us to successfully retrieve them. Fraud with ATM machines has
become a dangerous business, since photos of the suspects are
automatically displayed to every officer."
This week Netpresenter will appear on Internet Showcase in San
Diego, CA. A by-invitation-only executive conference where the
technology elite meet to get a hands-on look at a select group
of the hottest products and technologies for Internet and Intranet
users. "Netpresenter is an example of socially-redeeming
push," says David Coursey, Americas most influential
IT newsletter editor. "Its a nice application in a
space thats been way overhyped. Netpresenter does a good
job of what it promises."
